Andalucia has a large variety of
outdoor sporting activities. You could opt for winter Sports in the
Sierra Nevada. The ski season is from December to April.
Alternatively or you could opt for the summer activities; Diving
is
available at many of the costal areas. Seasoned divers may find that the western part of the
Mediterranean Ocean is not particularly challenging but there is still plenty to
see and explore, particularly the closer one gets to the meeting point of the
Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Going eastwards, the coastline is much more
rugged around Cabo de Gata, in Almeria, and on the Costa Tropical,
at Almunecar. Windsurfing.
For beginners to average windsurfers there are numerous
resorts on the Costa’s where you can windsurf. Roquetas del Mar is one
such resort, where you can build up your confidence gradually in a gentle
breeze. Horse Riding.
The horse is an
integral part of rural life in Andalucia. You will find that numerous
farms, riding schools, manèges and stables provide riding lessons or simply
hire horses for riding. All standards of riders are catered for and the varied
landscape offers a large selection of venues from beach rides to mountain treks
or classic horseback trails. Skiing. You may be
surprised to discover that Andalucia actually has a ski resort, having heard of
its climate. However if you travel to The Sierra Nevada you will find the high
altitude Sierra Nevada ski resort, where the 1996 world ski championships was
hosted. Cycling. In the country as a whole,
cycling is a popular competitive sport, with over 5,000 annual cycling races and
events staged at all levels throughout the country. These include many
professional races, such as the tour of Spain held over three weeks in April and
May and the third most important world cycle race after the tours
of France and Italy. Mountain
biking. In
Andalucia there are so many hills, mountains and open spaces that it’s hardly
surprising that mountain biking is a popular sport. Mountain biking is treated
as either a serious sports, or a relaxing pastime in Andalucia, the choice of
how serious you wish to take it is entirely yours but either way the terrain and
weather in Andalucia are ideal. Bikes can be rented in many mountain resorts and
can even be taken on specially adapted chair lifts to the tops of mountains.
